Sleeve Gastrectomy

The sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive surgical technique that involves removing approximately two-thirds of the stomach, particularly the portion containing the cells that secrete the appetite-stimulating hormone ghrelin.

The stomach is reduced to a vertical tube, allowing food to pass quickly into the intestine. Additionally, appetite is significantly reduced. This procedure does not interfere with the digestion of food.

Among bariatric surgeries, the sleeve gastrectomy offers the best balance of benefits versus risks. Due to its effectiveness and patient preference, it has become the most widely performed bariatric procedure worldwide for the last decade.
